Founded by three cadets at the Virginia Military Institute in a period of civil strife known as Reconstruction, Sigma Nu represented a radical departure from the times. The system of physical abuse and hazing of underclassmen at VMI led to James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles, and James McIlvaine Riley to form the “Legion of Honor” which soon became Sigma Nu Fraternity. So, amidst a backdrop of turmoil, North America’s first “Honor” fraternity was established.
Sigma Nu’s values of love, truth, and honor are the ideals that the brothers of the Zeta Theta Chapter at Presbyterian College strive to live by in all aspects of their lives. The brothers are leaders in the classrooms, in honor societies, in community life, in non-Greek student organizations, and in student government. The brothers of Zeta Theta develop friendships that last a life time and assist furthering members’ contacts after their collegiate years.
